Lash Artist Wellbeing

“In a world where you can be anything, be kind”

This is something we have all heard a lot of at the moment, we can be kind to everyone around us, but what about being kind to our own wellbeing and mental health.

As lash techs we spend our time making others feel good, offering a sympathetic ear, sharing our client’s ups and downs. We remember our client’s children’s names, remember to ask how their nights out were, get excited with them about the planning, and prep for their big day! This is one of the things we all probably love about our job, but we need to take some time out to think about us.

We have varied conversations, we put on smile and we rock it. Let’s be honest, most of us are probably rocking the messy bun look and chipped nails, as we don’t have the time to pamper ourselves. But making time for our mental wellbeing is just as important. We often don’t want to be a burden to anyone but call your friends and family if you have a bad day. You will be surprised how much better you’ll feel.

The rollercoaster of lockdown has made me think a lot about my own mental health, and of others around me. It’s been a very isolating time for so many, but that got to me thinking about the role of a lash tech. In large yes, we spend a lot of time with people, but it can be an isolating job. If you aren’t working alone, you can pass your colleagues in the day for a matter of seconds in between clients.

One thing that we already knew is how resilient we are within the industry, over the last few months that resilience has been tested. Despite feeling like we have been overlooked and undervalued, the support we have all shown each other is amazing! We have sent each other words of encouragement, advice, and kindness. This is something that we should all continue to do. Once we get back to salon life and feel overwhelmed, anxious, or low, we should continue to lean on each other, and take comfort that we aren’t alone.

Even if we can’t make time for those beauty treatments, let’s make time to take a few minutes out of the day for our minds. I have always been a big advocate of mindfulness and have found myself doing this more than ever. Taking a few minutes to be still in the moment, feel grounded, and just be. Don’t worry if you feel stupid at first! I know I did, but it really does help. Make time for a self-care Sunday. Even if you can squeeze in half an hour, get that face mask on (we know that fixes a lot of things for us) switch off your phone, and get off the grid for a bit.

One thing I have learned is it’s ok not to be ok sometimes, I used to say to myself why are you bothered about this, why are you feeling so down. We take it personally if we have a complaint, we worry about finances and not getting clients in. But one thing I have come to understand is that we can’t control everything.

I just wanted to write this, so you know you aren’t alone, continue to be kind to others, but mostly to yourself.
