How to Become a Lash Tech

Thinking about becoming a lash tech but don’t know where to start? You might be thinking of doing lashes as a side hustle, or maybe you’re tired of your corporate job and want to make a full career switch. We know that you probably have a passion for beauty and making people feel good.

This guide covers everything you need to know about starting in the lash industry, from training to tools, pricing, and how to start get clients through your door.

What You Need to Get Started as a Lash Tech

First things first, to become a lash tech in the UK, you’ll need a few essentials:

Training & Qualifications

You can’t skip this step. A proper lash course will teach you everything from health and safety to lash isolation, application techniques, styling, and aftercare. Make sure the course is fully accredited. This is super important for getting insured!

If you're just starting out, you need to go for a Classic Lash Extension Course. Once you’ve nailed that, you can build your skills and ‘lash menu’ with Russian Volume, Lash Lifts and Brow Laminations etc.

Your Lash Kit & Tools

Most beginner courses include a kit, but if not, you’ll need to invest in:

  • Mannequin & training lashes

  • Tweezers (isolation & application)

  • Lash trays (start with classic lashes that are 0.15 thickness)

  • Adhesive (don’t forget adhesive remover and a primer)

  • Adhesive holder

  • Lash cleanser & brush

  • Eye pads & tape

You may also want to invest in a light and lash bed or pillow, however these are not essential when you start. Just make sure you’re lashing in a bright environment where you can see and make sure you and your client are comfortable.

You don’t need to spend a fortune, but avoid super cheap tools that don’t perform. Your work depends on them!

Insurance

Once you’re qualified, you’ll need public liability insurance to protect yourself and your clients. In the UK, companies like Salon Gold and ABT offer cover specifically for beauty professionals. Make sure your course is accredited so you can get insured with no issues. You MUST get insurance before you start lashing clients.

The “I’m qualified and insured… now what?” Stage

This is the part most people struggle with… getting your first clients and knowing what to charge. While there is no right answer for this, here are some suggestions to help.

  • Offer model sets at discounted rates while you build confidence. These aren’t ‘free’ sets, they’re helping you grow your skills and portfolio.

  • Take good photos of your work (get yourself a macro lens and make sure you have good lighting! Read more here) and start posting on socials (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook groups are also great for getting locals to see you…wherever your audience is!).

  • Remember to ask your friends, family, and colleagues, and get them to spread the word.

How Much Should You Charge as a Beginner Lash Tech?

You can charge whatever works for you, there are no rules. However, we suggest starting around £20-£30 for Classic sets while you're practicing. As your work improves and you get real feedback, gradually increase your prices.

Remember, you are learning so be nice to yourself! Don’t compare yourself to lash techs who’ve been doing this for years, everyone starts somewhere.

How Much Can Lash Techs Make in the UK?

This one gets asked a lot.

As a self-employed lash tech, earnings vary. Beginners might make £100-£300 a week while building up. Experienced lash techs doing 3-5 sets a day can earn £800+ a week, especially if you offer volume sets and charge your worth

NOTE: Remember you will need to set yourself up as a self employed business with HMRC. We know this can be very overwhelming so read this guide for step by step help, specifically for Lash Artists.

One thing you will have to bear in mind is the cost of running your business. While starting out you will have minimal outgoings, once you build your services up and include things like salon rent, stock etc, your take home may be reduced slightly. Check this blog out if you need a hand with pricing your sets correctly.

Some ways you can grow your business once you’ve got more experience, are by:

  • Renting a space or opening your own studio
  • Working in a salon
  • Offering training once you’re experienced
  • Adding more services like lash lifts, brow lamination, or skincare

Ongoing Support & Upskilling

The beauty industry is always evolving. To stay booked and busy, and one of our main focuses at LashBase, you need to keep learning!

We recommend:

A good training provider should offer ongoing support, not just a certificate and goodbye (unfortunately those do exist!).
